About MLA
Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) is an industry-owned, not-for-profit company. It supports the entire red meat supply chain including cattle, sheep, and goats, and works with both producers and processors with the core purpose of fostering the prosperity of the red meat industry.
MLA collects levies through the Australian Government on the sale of each head of cattle, sheep and goats sold under the Primary Industries Levies and Charges Disbursement Act 2024 with the Australian Government matching R&D funding. It also generates additional investment through the MLA Donor Company (MDC), which co-invests with businesses and startups and encourages commercialisation.

Funding
MLA receives funding from:
- Transaction levies paid on livestock sales,
- R&D co-contribution from the Australian Government through the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, and
- Other partners to invest in research, development and marketing domestically and internationally.
Strategic priorities
MLA invests in research and projects that align with their strategic priorities, annual operating plan and the broader industry plan, Red Meat 2030. These priorities are listed above and outlined in the MLA Strategic Plan 2030.
